For younger students, learning typically centres on their immediate world of family, school, friends and neighbourhood. Preschool – Cycle 2 classes have been participating in a number of intercultural language learning activities around the theme of Mother’s Day: comparing the Indonesian and English traditions and noticing the similarities/differences in cultural practices.
The Mother’s Day theme is particularly accessible for pre-schoolers and encourages early acquisition of important ‘family life’ vocabulary. Learning the word ‘Ibu’ (Mum), copying, writing and saying it aloud is their first introduction to Indonesian language, its sounds and values. The children have enjoyed making a colourful bookmark in the shape of a ‘Gunungan’ (shadow puppet motif) for their ‘Ibu’.
Selamat Hari Ibu! (Happy Mother’s Day)
